Junior Golfer Jack Dirkin has enjoyed a very successful year playing golf, and this has recently been recognised at Shropshire’s Energize Awards - with Jack winning ‘Newcomer of The Year’, in partnership with BBC Radio Shropshire.
This award recognises the achievement of an individual in their first 18 months of participation in their chosen sport, activity or role. They should have made an outstanding or inspirational contribution, above and beyond that normally expected of a participant, official, coach or volunteer within their first 18 months.
Over the last 18 months, Jack has had meteoric rise in golf. In 2014 he became the Shropshire u8 Golf Champion and came 4th in the UK u6 Boys Finals at St Andrews and was the highest placed 5 year olf in the UK.
This year he qualified and competed in the European u7 boys finals in Scotland at the end of May finishing 24th out of a field of 55 (Still aged 5), the British u7 Finals in August finishing 8th, and the World u6 Golf Finals at Pinehurst Golf Club in the USA, finishing 32nd out of 78 - as the joint highest placed UK player.
On the 30th August this year Jack won and was crowned UK u6 Boys Golf Champion at St Andrews beating a field of 16 other UK Regional winners by 4 shots.
Jack has been an inspiration to his classmates, and the Junior section of his local golf course has grown particularly with younger golfers recently with the interest Jack has created.
